Dioctyl Sebacate (DOS, CAS 122-62-3) has become the de facto standard for extreme-cold PVC cable insulation in the aerospace industry. Three technical properties make it irreplaceable:

1. Brittle Point Below -60°C

At 50 phr loading in PVC, DOS achieves a brittle point ≤ -60°C—a full 10°C lower than DOA and 22°C lower than DINA. This margin translates to reliable cold-soak certification with headroom to spare, reducing batch rejection rates and qualification costs for cable manufacturers.

2. Ultra-Low Volatility at Altitude

At cruising altitudes (30,000-40,000 ft), ambient pressure drops to approximately 0.2-0.3 atm. Under these low-pressure conditions, plasticizers with higher volatility (like DOA at 0.3-0.5% weight loss at 125°C/2h) can outgas, gradually embrittling the PVC compound. DOS, with heat loss ≤ 0.1% under the same conditions, maintains formulation integrity for the full service life of the aircraft—often 20-30 years.

3. Excellent Electrical Properties

DOS's high purity (ester content ≥ 99.0%, acid value ≤ 0.05 mgKOH/g) ensures minimal ionic contamination, preserving the excellent volume resistivity and dielectric strength required for avionics signal cables and high-voltage power distribution wiring.
